Safer Choice Meaning

The EPA allows safer products to carry the Safer Choice label. This mark allows consumers to quickly identify and choose products that can help protect the environment and are safer for families. All L44 products have earned the right to use the Safer Choice logo.

When you see the Safer Choice logo on a product it means:

  • The Safer Choice scientific review team has screened each ingredient for potential human health and environmental effects.
  • The product contains only those ingredients that pose the least concern among chemicals in their class based on currently available information, EPA predictive models, and expert judgment.

Product manufacturers who become Safer Choice partners and earn the right to display the logo on their products have invested heavily in research, development, and reformulation to ensure that their ingredients and finished products line up on the green end of the health and environmental spectrum while maintaining or improving product performance.

Safer Choice Assurance

How does the EPA ensure that products bearing the label are really safer?

The Safer Choice Team, comprised of EPA scientists who have studied chemicals for 30 years or longer, carefully looks at each product ingredient – no exceptions. They start with information that scientists already know about each ingredient, such as how it works in a detergent and how it affects living things.

Where that information doesn’t tell the full story, Safer Choice looks at an ingredient’s chemical structure – its components and shape – to understand how it could impact the environment and people. A chemical’s structure can tell a lot about how the chemical will behave and what types of effects it may have when it comes in contact with people or the environment.

How We Qualify For Safer Choice Labeling

Safer Choice allows only the best products in their class use of the logo. The Safer Choice Team compares a chemical’s characteristics to other chemicals in the same class; that is, solvents are compared to other solvents, and surfactants (wetting agents) are compared with other surfactants. Before Safer Choice allows their logo on a product, they make sure that only the safest ingredients from each class are used. We are proud to say, all L44 products meet the Safer Choice criteria, as well as other institutions, for environmental and human safety, and carry the logo that you can count on for truly green chemistry.

Safer Choice Logo

Safer Choice is located in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT). OPPT has regulated chemicals for more than 30 years and has unique expertise in understanding the impacts of chemicals on people and the environment.

When you see the Safer Choice logo on a product, expect the safest possible ingredients. This logo means that the EPA’s review team has screened each ingredient in the product for potential human health and environmental effects. It also means that – based on hazard and risk information, the latest models and predictive tools, and expert scientific judgment – the product contains only those ingredients that pose the least concern among chemicals in their class.

For example, if a Safer Choice-recognized product contains a surfactant, then that surfactant will not be toxic to human health and it will biodegrade readily to non-polluting degradation products. Many surfactants in conventional products biodegrade slowly or biodegrade to more toxic and persistent chemicals, which threaten aquatic life.

Safer Choice Review Team

Safer Choice formulator review is especially discriminating and protective. This program is unique because of two defining characteristics: its assessment methodology and its technical review team.

The Safer Choice technical review team has many years of experience and is highly skilled at assessing chemical hazards, applying predictive tools, and identifying safer substitutes for chemicals of concern. The review team applies the Safer Choice assessment methodology by carefully reviewing every product ingredient. The review includes all chemicals, including those in proprietary raw material blends and colorants, which manufacturers share with Safer Choice in confidentiality.

  • “I wanted to take a minute to thank you and Custom Compounders for putting out the L44ECD degreaser. Our crews use your degreaser on a daily basis and feel that it preforms very well. As the manager of our facility I appreciate the fact that your degreaser is user friendly, environmentally friendly, and meets or exceeds our government standards. I regularly pass the information on L44 along to others that we work with in the industry including fuel and oil suppliers.”

    Karl Berthelot
    Manager BMI Ste. Gen.

  • “I have worked for Luhr Bros. Inc. for 26 yrs on the boats and in their office. I came in the office in 1996 as a Safety Manager. We have been using the “L-44 ECD” Degreaser for about 4 yrs. From my perspective as a Safety Professional, the L-44 “ECD” Degreaser we are using is better than any other degreasers we have used by far. With “L-44 ECD” Degreaser we have an environmentally safe product, and no crew members having to attend medical facilities due to being burned by direct skin contact. Also it does a great job cleaning our engines and not fading the paint job. I encourage all the river companies to give it a try.”

    Bill Klingel
    Luhr Bros Inc. Marine Division

  • “We enjoy an honored privilege for the opportunity extended our company by Joe Brantley of AEP River Operations to have L-44® ECD Degreaser evaluated as part of their corporate “Go Green” mission aboard the mv. Donna Rushing. We are uniquely indebted to AEP, and for the detailed efforts of Rob Korte and Jim Wilson for their testing reviews of L-44® ECD on multiple tugboats of the AEP fleet."

    Project Go Green

  • “I have been using degreasers for many years and have never had the quality of degreaser that I am now using with the L-44 ECD. It reduces the amount of time I have to spend in the engine room cleaning which allows me more time to concentrate on my other duties. The younger generation of engineers are going to be spoiled by using a higher quality of degreaser than we had to use in the past. They will spend less time cleaning and no burning or skin irritation when it comes in contact with your skin.”
